Rocinha

Rio de Janeiro, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil

The Basics

The best way to visit Rocinha is on an organized tour with a local guide who is familiar with the daily challenges of neighborhood residents, as well as various sustainable development efforts and empowering grassroots actions being taken in the favela. Educational walking tours offer insight into daily life for Rocinha residents while leading visitors to spots they’d be unlikely to find on their own, such as craft shops, community centers, and well-situated viewpoints. Private tours offer more personalized experiences and cultural exchanges.

A spiritual experience
Carlos elevated Rocinha into much more than something for tourists to gawk at. He brought a social consciousness and authenticity that had our group in tears. Of all the sites in Rio (and we saw them all) this was the most affecting.

Favela Tour Rocinha and Vila Canoas in Rio de Janeiro
As a rule I generally shy away from certain types of "cultural tourism" while traveling abroad (e.g. those that cater to relatively wealthy tourists seeking out local and indigenous communities for the sole purpose of treating the locals as glorified props with which to spice up an otherwise sheltered, all-inclusive resort vacation and make their bubble trip seem more "exotic" to their instagram followers...) but this tour was anything but! Our tour guide Leo kept things dynamic and interesting but was highly informative as we explored the community - we were able to go from the rooftops to the deep alleyways and everywhere in between as we got a crash course into favela life. I felt totally safe the entire time and our small group size (just Leo and my group of 4) ensured we really got an in-depth view of Rocinha and all of our individual questions answered. My favorite part of the tour were the opportunities to buy local food, drinks, and souvenirs where the revenue could actually go back to the community. Highly recommended to anyone visiting Rio!

Favela Tour in Rocinha with Transfer
Excellent experience, the guide picked me up from Copacabana and then we headed to Rocinha. She taught me a lot about the favela, its history and its people. She showed me some hidden spots to take the perfect pictures. I extremely recommend this tour with the best guide in Rio.

Private Walking and Cultural Tour Rocinha-Rio de Janeiro
Safe, humbling, historical...these are just a few words I would use to describe the Favela of Rocinha. The Faneca Brothers tour group did a fantastic job handling our schedule and devoting their time to my group and I. Growing up and living there to this day gave an insight most "outsiders" don't understand. If I would have left Rio without doing this I believe I would have missed out on a unique cultural experience. Please take the time to view Rio from a different perspective!

Favela Tour Rocinha and Vila Canoas in Rio de Janeiro
The Favela tour was amazing! Our tour guid was very informative, showed us a lot of things!definitely must do thing while you are in Rio! It shows you culture and different way of life in Brazil! Views are fantastic there as well! It will take you around 3,5 hours to complete the whole tour and it is a quite workout but our tour guide Leo made it fun and interesting even though some parts of favellas are steep and it is quite good workout to go up the hill!

Private Walking and Cultural Tour Rocinha-Rio de Janeiro
This is the most rememberable experience I will carry with me from my trip to Rio. Obi gave me an authentic experience walking through Rocinha, telling about the community and his own life experiences. I enjoyed every step and got to see so much. Thank you Obi!

Rocinha Favela Walking Tour
Our tour guide made sure we was safe, took a whole bunch of pictures and gave us a really good detailed history about the Favela. I really enjoyed myself. I would do it again next time i visit as well. I would recommend this tour to anyone who’s interested in going to see the Rocinha Favela

Things to Know Before You Go

  • Some tours donate a portion of proceeds to Rochina nonprofits or employ local tour guides to give back to the community.

  • A guided tour led by a local is the safest way to visit Rocinha.

  • Wear comfortable, closed-toe shoes suitable for walking on uneven surfaces, or book a tour by bike or vehicle to stay off your feet.

  • Favelas provide a stark contrast to Rio’s ritzy neighborhoods, such as Ipanema, and an educational tour of Rocinha can offer a well-rounded understanding of Rio’s varying socioeconomic environments.

A Note on the Ethics of Slum Tourism

We are sensitive to the issues and concerns surrounding slums, and we understand that tours of them may not be suitable for everyone. We strongly believe that these tours are educational and allow for a better understanding of life inside Rocinha.
