Santa Teresa (Barrio Santa Teresa) Tours and Activities

star-5
2,042 Reviews

This unlikely cobblestoned neighborhood close to the center of Rio de Janeiro has long been a tourist favorite among visitors to this Brazilian city. Santa Teresa (Barrio Santa Teresa) is located on the top of the hill of the same name, and takes its name from a convent built in the 1750s. It has a history as an upper class neighborhood, as some of its larger and more elaborately built mansions can attest. Santa Teresa has become an artist enclave in recent years, and is a great place to spend an afternoon, wandering among eateries, enjoying a cold beer, and checking out galleries and stands where you can buy artists renderings of the Cidade Maravilhosa (amazing city, as Rio is frequently called), or other souvenirs.

There are also a few museums worth visiting, such as the main art museum, the Museu da Chácara do Céu, housed in art collector Raimundo Otoni Castro Moya’s former mansion, that has works from Miró and Matisse, among other greats. Other architectural surprises include the Russian Orthodox Church. For the moment, the only way to experience the famous tramway that brought residents and visitors to the top of Santa Teresa is through the museum, Museu do Bonde, which tells the tram’s story, and shows it crossing the Carioca Aqueduct, at over 45 meters in height. The tram has been out of service since 2011, but plans are afoot to get it back up and running in 2015. For now, visitors take a taxi or the bus up the hill.

star-5

Coming to our cooking classes is a unique opportunity to learn how to prepare (and eat) delicious, traditional food that also happens to be whole-food, plant-based, and to discover interesting aspects of the history and culture of Brazil. It is also a great opportunity to meet young world travelers and expats living in Brazil and see this country and its amazing rich culture through our eyes. For a start I prepared a short introduction to give you the background of the influences that shaped Brazilian cuisine. We then start by mixing the best Caipirinha you will probably drink in Brazil. Be warned! I will ruin you for the Caipirinhas at the beach or in the streets ;) After that we start preparing our food. Learn how to make Feijoada and Moqueca, Acarajé and Vatapá, Farofa and other Brazilian delicatessen. At the end we will enjoy our meal in our patio under the Mango tree.

Colonial and French Architecture - Santa Teresa The Artistic Heart of Rio!

Colonial and French Architecture - Santa Teresa The Artistic Heart of Rio!

star-5
2
This tour is special because the breezy hilltop location of Santa Teresa neighborhood in the middle of the downtown city of Rio de Janeiro is very unique. It was not by chance, that it was the first choice for wealthy settlers in Rio, back in time. The neighborhood’s cobbled streets are lined with some of the finest examples of colonial and French architecture of the time, mansions that were once home to the city’s wealthy elite, and today function as artists’ studios, restaurants, and guesthouses... The neighborhood is also known as the artistic heart of Rio. Strolling around the neighborhood is a pleasure in itself, and the views offered from the top are awesome. Besides, Santa Teresa is a top destination for foodies, as the neighborhood is one of the best places in the city to sample traditional dishes from across Brazil and the best caipirinhas in town.
