The Basics

As one of Rio’s most popular and enduring attractions, Sugarloaf Mountain deserves a spot on every itinerary, especially for first-time visitors. A two-stage cable car takes riders to the summit high above the city, with the first ascending 722 feet (220 meters) to Morro da Urca, where it’s possible to grab a snack as you overlook Guanabara Bay or hop on a helicopter tour. The second cable car ascends to the top, an experience included in most Rio sightseeing tours that also stop at attractions such as Corcovado Mountain, Santa Teresa’s art district, Copacabana Beach, Sambadrome, and Maracanã Stadium. Visitors pressed for time can pre-book skip-the-line Sugarloaf entrance with priority access to the cable car.

Wow!
Fantastic trip. We went mid week, late morning. Not at all busy. Skip the line pass worked really well. Taken to air conditioned waiting area and given cold drinks before boarding the cable car. Straight on, no queue involved. Spent several hours on Sugarloaf enjoying the views. Plenty shaded areas, drink and food. Took a stroll through the forest at the top. Wonderful experience not to be missed.

Christ Redeemer, Sugarloaf Mountain and Selarón Steps 6-Hour Tour
The tour was amazing. Luis (the tour guide) is very knowledgeable, smart and kind. His experience does make a difference. It was my first time in Rio and I'll be back, for sure. Next time, I need to make sure I get another tour with Luis. Great work, great customer service. Great job!!!!

Great first day in Rio! We saw all the major spots in Rio in just half a day! This helped us get acquainted with the city when we first arrived. Our tour guide was so great and very informative. He spoke serval languages to accommodate the group. You can see these sites on your own but the information our guide provided us made it worth it! We were treated like first class ! Highly reccomend this tour especially if you want a nice relaxing experience have someone show you around their city!

Was late for tour start and organizer was very accommodating. They do not pickup in Central hotels so compromises there also. I was able to see all the attractions as advised and guides were great

Christ Redeemer, Sugarloaf Mountain and Selarón Steps 6-Hour Tour
Beautiful tour with a little bit of everything. Was very nice, Melanie and Marco were great! Would not recommend for anyone that cannot walk much. My mother is 73 and she had a hard time. We thought we wouldn’t get to see the Christ the Redeemer because of the fog but we were able to get a few great pictures! Would definitely recommend this tour!

Skip the Line: Fast Pass Ticket Bondinho Pão de Açúcar
We had VVIP treatment with our Skip the Line Admission ticket. We were ushered into an air-conditioned waiting area, away from the crowds then took the next train which came within 5 mins! The cable car ride was scenic on a clear day. We took our time to enjoy the view and cool weather at the summit. Coming back was a breeze even though we did not have 'Skip the Line' privileges on descent

On a clear day, this is a most enjoyable way to explore all the breathtaking sights of Rio de Janeiro. Well organised, modern and safe cable car, lovely walking paths, great variety of places to have a drink or a snack.

Things to Know Before You Go

  • Sugarloaf Mountain is a must-see for first-time visitors to Rio de Janeiro.

  • Choose between skip-the-line admission and a small-group or private tour of the mountain.

  • Kiosks at the top of the mountain serve snacks, sodas, ice cream, and caipirinhas.

  • Remember to bring sunglasses and a hat, as it may be bright at the top of the mountain.

How to Get to Sugarloaf Mountain

Sugarloaf Mountain is a stop on almost every city tour, and most travelers get to the top by taking a cable car ride. Those with energy to burn can make the relatively easy hike up Urca Hill from the ground station to Morro da Urca (30 to 40 minutes), then ride the second cable car to the top. Buses 511 and 512 stop at the ground station on Avenida Pasteur.

When to Get There

Weekend afternoons tend to be the most crowded at Sugarloaf Mountain, with the longest cable car lines and the biggest crowds at the top. To avoid the lines and heat, plan for a morning tour. For one of the most impressive views the city has to offer, visit on a clear day just before sunset.
